چکیده
For solving the eigenvalue problem of a structural system having a large number of degrees of freedom the authors introduced in 6] the improved condensation method using the Rayleigh functional of the exactly condensed nonlinear eigenvalue problem. In this paper we discuss the implementation of the method for substructured problems on a distributed memory MIMD Computer. Examples are presented which demonstrate the eeciency of the method at least if the number of substructures is not too large. INTRODUCTION In the dynamic analysis of structures using the nite element method very large eigenvalue problems arise, and condensation is often employed to reduce the number of degrees of freedom to manageable size. To this end Guyan 2] and Irons 3] introduced a method which is called static condensation nowadays and which is based upon eliminating a large number of coordinates (called slaves) and retaining a small portion of the unknown coordinates (called masters). However, it is well known that often only very few eigenvalues at the lower end of the spectrum are achieved with reasonable accuracy. Several attempts have been made to increase the accuracy of the eigen-values of the condensed problem. In 6] we took advantage of the structure

Control Techniques for Multi-axis Real-time Dynamic Substructuring
Real-time substructuring is a novel hybrid method for the dynamic testing of complex engineering structures. This technique involves creating a hybrid model of the entire structure by combining an experimental test piece with the remainder of the structure being modelled numerically. The essence of this technique is to emulate the dynamic behaviour of the complete original structure by using re...
متن کاملTheoretical Relations Between Domain Decomposition and Dynamic Substructuring
Domain decomposition methods used for solving linear systems are strongly related to dynamic substructuring methods commonly used to build a reduced model. In this study we investigate some theoretical relations between the methods. In particular we discuss the conceptual similarities between the Schur Complement solvers and the Craig-Bampton substructuring techniques, both for their primal and...
متن کاملAn Algebraic Substructuring Method for Large-Scale Eigenvalue Calculation
This paper is concerned with solving large-scale eigenvalue problems by algebraic substructuring. Algebraic substructuring refers to the process of applying matrix reordering and partitioning algorithms to divide a large sparse matrix into smaller submatrices from which a subset of spectral components are extracted and combined to form approximate solutions to the original problem. Through an a...
متن کاملModeling the Orientation-Dependent Dynamics of Machine Tools with Gimbal Heads
Machine tools with gimbal heads continuously rotate and/or pivot their spindle heads to maintain the required relationship between the tool and the surface being cut. This results in orientation-dependent dynamic behavior at the tool-center-point, which further results in orientation-dependent machining stability of the system, potentially limiting productivity during continuous cutting. A dyna...
متن کاملOn the Use of Delay Equations in Engineering Applications
This paper is a review of applications of delay differential equations to different areas of engineering science. Starting with a general overview of delay models, we present some recent results on the use of retarded, advanced and neutral delay differential equations. An emerging area for modeling with the help of delay equations is real-time dynamic substructuring, or hybrid testing. We intro...
